audience theory

1)I do not play violent video games however I do watch movies that sometimes carry violent content, but I am not very violent in real life
When I see products advertised online or on the tv that appeals to me for e.g. skincare products or online clothing websites i do get tempted to buy them. Documentaries especially historical that speaks of my heritage and wild life documentaries is something that  find myself drawn to.

2) Bandura: Social Learning Theory
   Stanley Cohen: Moral Panic
   Tecnopanic: Modern Moral Panic
   George Gerbner: Cultivation Theory

3) Child's Play, Natural Born Killers, and Marilyn Manson are the three media texts provided as examples for the Hypodermic Syringe Model, which were used to blame for certain events.

4) The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting that occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine,an unincorporated area of Jefferson County in the American state of Colorado. In addition to the shootings, the complex and highly planned attack involved a fire bomb to divert firefighters, propane tanks converted to bombs placed in the cafeteria, 99 explosive devices, and car bombs. The perpetrators, senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered 12 students and one teacher. They injured 21 additional people, and three more were injured while attempting to escape the school. The pair subsequently committed suicide.

5) I believe that the reason for shooting was the alienation felt by teenagers who felt as though they didn't fit in and also because the ease of access to firearms and the social acceptance of gun ownership.

6) Gerbner's Cultivation theory considers the way the media affects attitudes rather than behaviour. The media is seen as part of our socialisation process, communicating ‘appropriate’ attitudes and the norms and values of the culture. According to this theory, while any one media text does not have too much effect, repeated exposure to certain ideas and values may make the audience less critical of the ideas presented as they appear ‘normal’.

7) This cover retaliates against to the idea of young children being glued to the computer screens and expresses the idea of it being unhealthy. This links to the cultivation theory as it shows how the society has become immune to the idea of young children using internet excessively.

8)The repetition of the simple values above makes them appear more natural and the texts doesn't always encourage the audience to question the values presented. Essentially violence is supported in action films as a method for the hero to save the world using violence. The only difference between him and the villain is that we agree with the hero’s motivations.

9)The fact sheet suggests that direct effect theories such as the Hypodermic Needle Model assume "that the audience are passive and that all members of the audience group are the same and respond in similar ways", which is a criticism as it intensifies that these theories are simplistic, and offer simple explanations to complex ideologies.

10))The 90's sitcom "Love Thy Neighbour" would be extremely controversial today because it Is based on a suburban white working class couple in Twickenham attempting to come to terms with having a black couple as next-door neighbours which would highly offending in today's society. Love Thy Neighbour was hugely popular at the time of its broadcast; during an era in which Britain struggled to come to terms with its recently arrived population of black immigrants, Love Thy Neighbour exemplified this struggle. However, today it would arouse a great deal of controversy because views and meanings in society have changed. This supports Hall's Reception Theory.

11) I believe that the cultivation theory is the most convincing and also reflects some of my opinions. This is because it's the most reflected in today's society, and it is not as simple as direct theories such as the Hypodermic Needle Model which conclude that humans are passive, like computers.
