Mens health csp analysis

1) Write a one-paragraph summary of your notes for each key concept from the booklet:

Media Language (e.g. conventions, narrative, genre etc.)

Some of the conventions of the magazine such as the colour scheme, layout, and typography are chosen carefully and deliberately to reflect the ideologies and hegemonic views of the magazine regarding masculinity. For example, the sharp, bold typography and font reflects the tough, 'unbreakable' traits in which MH expect in masculinity today.
Narrative wise, the main message MH is trying to portray is that the amount of money and sex a man receives will determine his overall success in life.
Applying Propp's character theory, we could argue that MH appears to be the 'hero' or 'donor' which assists the reader (princess) on the quest of building a more masculine body.
Similarly, we can apply Jonah Sac's theory that in advertising, the company (in this case, MH) always suggest that there is something wrong with the individuals life (No muscles, no masculinity, no success), and that it is here to offer something as a solution.
Genre wise, we can apply Neale's theory of repetition and difference; in this case, we can define the genre of the magazine by repetitive traits such as: its conformity to stereotypes of hegemonic masculinity.

Media Industries (e.g. Hearst Communications)
Hearst communications is a horizontal integration, owning numbers of newspapers, magazines, radio and tv stations, etc. This arrangement allows it to cross-promote its media products between the different media stations and platforms it owns, making it highly successful. It is referred to as a media-conglomerate due to the fact that it owns several little companies. The company also offers internet and online marketing services, which is another reason as to why it is successful; whilst the digital disruption era took place and began wiping out companies, Heart began engaging with social media and became part of the movement. Its online presence has also encouraged a more active readership/audience for its media products as well as an overall increase in audience numbers.
It is also one of the world largest communication companies.

Media Audiences (e.g. demographics, psychographics, pleasures)

Demographic of ABC1 aswell as a smaller percentage of C2DE. Their target would mostly be young men (25+) of an AB category as they can afford the £4.10 price of the magazine or be able to not think about spending that amount of money and think of it as a big expense. They also would have to be succeeders - at the top of their field to have the money get a gym membership and afford the supplements they advertise.

Media Representations (e.g. masculinity)

2) Identify three specific aspects/conventions (e.g. cover line, colour scheme, text, image etc.) from each page of the CSP that you could refer to in a future exam. Explain why that particular aspect of the CSP is important - think about connotations, representations, audience pleasures, reception theory etc.

Front cover: Vin DieselThe cover star aka Vin Diesel is made to be a reflection of what the reader wants to become. Also, an influential figure like him would be important to use as he was everywhere in cinemas with his new movies, so he would naturally bring in a wider readership.

Editor's Letter and contents page

Having the editor write a note to make it  more persona and explain how the magazine will help them achieve the image of a better body, similar to Vin Diesel's as he is the main star.

Feature: True Grit - 'The Marathon Man'

This encourages and motivates the men to aspire to look and act like him when they are in their late 60s. This links to personal identity and relationships, because the readers would want to be as successful as him.

3) Type up three media theories that you think are particularly relevant to analysing Men's Health and explain why they are significant:

1) Butler- Gender performance; Mens Health definitely presents masculinity as a performance of traditional, hegemonic masculinity
2)Gauntlett- Masculinity in crisis- MH tries to counteract the crisis by taglines and features such as '#slaywinterblues'
