Denotation

This advert is 50-Cent staring down the camera, looking intimidating. Also, there is a quotation of his on the right, as well as, the words “I am what I am.” In addition, underneath that there are fingerprints.

Connotation

The musician staring down the camera could make the audience feel intimidated as he is perhaps trying to portray a difficult upbringing, which I reinforced by the opaque, white text “I am what I Am.” This suggests that he knows that he has had a tough childhood and believes that is what has moulded him into what he is today. Furthermore, the fingerprints in the background suggest crime and further suggest that this musician has had a tough life, going in and out of prisons.

Colour

The advert’s colours are quite dark, giving the advert murky undertones. Furthermore, the multiple uses of black around the advertisement which could suggest murder and crime. Also, there is a theme of mystery about this advert as there is just a quote, and the audience may not know so much about 50-cent’s background, creating a sense of anonymity.

Pose

The pose of 50-Cent further makes the advert seem as if it was not made for sportswear due to the fact that the way he is posed makes him seem like he is in a position of power, doing this makes him seem stronger and more intimidating, which could potentially paint a bad image for Reebok. Also, the way he is posed highlights the cap to the side, which is commonly linked with gangs.

Lighting

This image seems like it was taken indoors due to the dark and ominous background. This may have been done in order to achieve a serious tone in the advert. Doing this may make the company look like a heavyweight company that is ready to take risks, this advert being one of them.

Composition

This image has been brought together through the use of an actual picture, an image of hand prints, who we can assume belong to 50-Cent, the man in the photo, and some text which doesn't take away from the rest of the image. Doing this adds depth to the advert and further portrays Reebok as a mindful company, although it may also paint them as gang affiliated as they have someone who used to live life quite roughly to achieve his come up.
